How to Save Your Gas Consumption

With the cost of gasoline adding to the burden of many households, it’s never too late to look for ways of keeping that money in your pocket rather than spending it out and letting it vanished into thin air. So apart from the rather obvious solution of not driving anywhere which in this age is not really practical, what can one do to save gas? Luckily there are numerous ways of achieving this with just a little effort and forward planning.

The first thing to consider is those often neglected items in a car namely the tires. Under inflated tires, it can increase your fuel consumption even if they are only 10 % under the recommended pressure. The reason for this is simple. Tires that are not at the recommended pressure have an increased rolling resistance which the car has to overcome thereby using more fuel. This can also lead to the tires overheating which then results to disastrous consequences. This can easily be avoided by checking the tires’ pressure once a week. You can refer to your car owner’s manual for the correct pressures for high speed driving and loaded vehicles. In the long run it will definitely pay off.

Another way to save fuel is to remove all unnecessary items out of your car. The reason being that driving around with a trunk full of junk increases the weight of the vehicle which means the engine has to work harder to maintain the same speed thus using more fuel in the process. This would also be an excellent time to clean your car using the best car vacuum once you have cleared the trunk.

Consolidating trips and errands will also save you loads of gas. Here, careful planning will reap dividends. Try and combine various tasks into one trip, for instance drop the kids off at school on the way to work instead of making a separate trip or stop and buy groceries on the way home.  Don’t do things on the spur of the moment when it can wait until tomorrow when you are going that way in any case.

Avoid excessive idling. Any fuel that is used whilst stationary is actually wasted fuel if you think about it. Note the emergence of vehicles which automatically switch the engine off when you are stationary at a traffic light thus saving fuel. You might not yet have that technology in your present car but you can still reduce the amount of fuel wasted by taking a route with fewer traffic lights and congestion. If possible avoid traveling during peak hours.

Keeping the speed limits will also save fuel as well as unwanted speeding tickets. The higher your speed especially on freeways, the greater your gas consumption will be. This is largely due to wind resistance which increases exponentially to the increase in speed. It is not compulsory to travel at the posted speed limit so travel a few mph below and save fuel; it will merely make little difference to your travel time.

Have your car serviced regularly. A poorly maintained car will use excessive fuel especially if the air filter is badly clogged. The simple science is, an engine relies on a carefully calibrated fuel/air mixture to perform efficiently. As the air filter clogs up less air is sucked in and therefore more fuel has to be injected to maintain the same ratio. While you are working on your car, why not use the best car vacuum and maintain the inside as well.

Use windows and air conditioning wisely. Open windows act as parachutes especially at high speed, slowing the car down and making the engine work so much harder. Using the air conditioner also increases fuel consumption drastically especially in stop/start city driving.

Needless to say, the greatest fuel saver by far is your style of driving. We have all seen at one time or another erratic drivers accelerating their speed, then slamming the brake, then speeding up again. This stop-and-start style of driving is not conducive to saving fuel and should be avoided. The lighter you are on the accelerator and the more you anticipate stopping in time, the less fuel you will use not to mention saving your brake linings!
